Honey-dipped apples,
sweetness carried through the year
shift light and shadow
dreams of peace and harmony
linger like the velvet wine
This Tanka is for Colleen Chesebro’s Weekly Poetry Challenge
The prompt words, honey and wine, make me think of Rosh Hashanah, which we will celebrate in about a month. We dip apples in honey for a sweet year, eat round challahs, and drink wine. It’s a holiday full of sweetness. Here, it takes place in early autumn.
Beautiful Merril! 🙂
Thank you so much, Holly!
What a lovely Tanka poem and holiday! Great use of the words, Merril. ❤
Thank you, Colleen! 🙂
These words have me stumped this week. But what a beautiful connection you’ve made! (K)
Thank you very much, Kerfe!
When I saw the photo I thought it looked biblical and the tanka proved true. I remember sending Rosh Hashanah cards to my hallmate at the college years ago.
Oh, that’s funny that the photo looks biblical to you. It’s part of our dining room table from last year’s Rosh Hashanah dinner. 🙂

Everything tastes better with wine. Delicious Tanka. 🙂
Thank you, Rose. 🙂
This is a lovely and fortuitous poem. Soon all of us may eat apples and bread. Even if just to break bread, drink wine to unite.
One of my Dad’s best friends at NASA was Irving Lezberg. He called him “Herb.” Do you think this was a nickname or I misheard his name?
In those days, we would call them Mr. and Mrs. Lezberg. We were blessed to go to their son’s Bar Mitzvah and celebrated a few holidays, mixing traditions together. I liked challah and a fruited bread, we were allowed juice glass size of Manishevitz wine (was misspelled).
Thank you, Robin. I’m glad this brought back good memories.
Gosh–no idea idea about your father’s friend’s name. I suppose it could have been a nickname or you mishearing it. My uncle Irv’s name was actually Erwin.
I can’t spell Manischewitz either. I always have to look it up. 🙂 I can’t stand that wine–it’s like cough syrup. Hahaha. We always had it at Passover.
Nice! Is it good ?!! Thanks for sharing
Homemade challah? Of course, it’s good! And so are honey, apples, and wine. 🙂
Very good and natural 🙂
