Moon Path, Freighter in Distanceย by Lionel Walden, oil on canvas
The sky held a secret,
and also, the land–
they told it to the birds,
who scattered it on the sand,
the waves swept it seaward,
and dolphins carried it away,
but they sang about it in their songs
until the sun heard them one day.
He sang it to his sister moon
(while on his lyre a-strumming)
and you might learn the secret, too . . .
just listen to the moonโs fierce humming.
I’m having one of those days, and so, I decided I needed whimsy. This is for my secrets prompt on dVerse.
You made me hear it, Merril. The art you chose is beautiful. It would make a very challenging jigsaw puzzle!
Thanks so much! I don’t do puzzles–but be my guest! ๐
You’re welcome ๐
I like the thought that the secrets are in the moon’s humming.
Thank you, Frank. Well, of course, I can’t tell you if it’s true. ๐
I’m having (had) one of those days too, so this was perfect!
Thanks so much, Jill! Hope your night is better. ๐
Yours too! ๐
Am listening to the moon’s humming. I love this one Merril!
Thank you very much, Grace!
So lovely!
“the waves swept it seaward,
and dolphins carried it away,
but they sang about it in their songs
until the sun heard them one day.”

A wonderful poem! Like a child’s verse!
Thank you very much!
Messages of nature, if only, more if us, can, pay a little, more attention…
Yes, that would be a good thing. Thank you!
I like the way you wove the secret through all the aspects of nature… Listen to the moon! Very good!
Thank you very much, Dwight!

Awww. . .thanks. That comment made ME smile. ๐
I love the flow, that secret
Maybe the secret is just to listen to the world.
Thank you, Sarah. Yes, perhaps it is.
I love a bit of whimsy, Merril, and your sky-held secret. I especially enjoyed the moonโs fierce humming and the lines:
โโฆdolphins carried it away,
but they sang about it in their songs
until the sun heard them one dayโ.
Thank you so much, Kim!
If everyone listened to the moon humming, the world would be a better place ๐
Thank you. I agree (of course). ๐
๐
oh this is so magical. the conniving of animals to carry the earth’s secret. the lyre. the tender details. sigh.
Thank you so much! โค
you’re welcome, Merril!
Whimsy is good at times. I hope it has helped.

Yes, indeed. Thank you, Frank!
kaykuala
and you might learn the secret, too . . .
just listen to the moonโs fierce humming.
It must be fascinating. The man on the moon may have been drowning his sorrows with angry sounds
Hank
Or perhaps the woman in the moon was telling the angry man to be quiet and listen. ๐
This is fantastic Merril. Absolutely beautiful!
Thank you so much, Linda!
I do love the focus on the sound in this… the moon-humming is something I would love to hear.
Thank you! I’m surprised you haven’t heard it. ๐
Nicely done. It sounds like it could be sung. The first stanza is my favorite.
Thank you very much, Ali!
beautiful take
Thank you!
Pleasure
