For Day Ten of Paul Brookes’ Special January Ekphrastic Challenge, my poem responds to two works:
Just Over There
These fuzzy-brained days–
I’m a hand-puppet, waiting for direction,
a sense of what to do, which way to go
some sense at all
to my sensibility—magical realism it may be
when the surreal is real
in this inside-out and upside-down world—where is the key
to unlock it?
Somewhere, a butterfly flutters, and the world shudders;
Somewhere a rabbit hops, escaping a predator, or setting off a bomb.
Crow caws, and I open my eyes,
there is light, crystalline bright—
just over there. See?
Reblogged this on The Wombwell Rainbow.
Thank you, Paul.
I love how, once again, you’ve woven the two images together. So wistful, hopeful. (K)
Thank you so much, Kerfe. I’m pleased you like it.
Well done, Merril. I love the fuzzy brained days.
Thank you, Jill! I was feeling that fuzzy-brain thing yesterday afternoon. 😀
I’ve been feeling it for months! 🙂
I have, too. Sigh.
These prompts are taking your poetry in different directions. Like the puppets 🙂
A good thing, I guess, to explore new directions?
Certainly. We don’t want to get predictable 🙂
You’re right.
BTW, I brought up “our” spatial problem last night at our family Zoom dinner–and it was hilarious, as daughters and I tried to figure out what rooms were above areas of the basement, and my husband and their spouses were incredulous. 🤣
That sounds so familiar! Do you also do the thing where you’re explaining how you saw something ‘over there by Clement’s house’ and point, and husband or other not spatially challenged person tells you you’re pointing in the opposite direction?
Hahahaha. Yes! 🤣
I guessed you would 🙂
Beautiful and brutal. Love it
Thank you very much.
I particularly like the visible shift from the first image to the second with “magical realism.”
Thank you very much, Liz!
You’re most welcome, Merril!
So well seen
Thank you very much, Derrick.
I love the whimsical feel of this one!
Thank you! 😀
