Poem in Nightingale and Sparrow

My daughters playing in the snow many years ago.

My poem, “The Blizzard of ’96” is in the recently published Blizzard issue of Nightingale and Sparrow. Perfect timing! πŸ˜€ My thanks to EIC Juliette Sebock. Here’s a link to my poem, but please do read the rest of the issue, which is available online and in print.

  1. Congratulations on your publication! I enjoyed the poem, particularly the giggle-slurping of hot cocoa. I hope there were marshmallows involved! I had the sense from the poem that such snow storms weren’t a regular occurance where you were living?

    • Thank you very much, Liz. I don’t know about the marshmallows. Probably not. πŸ˜€
It’s unusual that we don’t get some snow (as in last year). Most years we get some snow, but this storm was definitely an unusual storm. We are just south of Philadelphia, and north and west of the city is often where there is snow when we get sleet and ice.

  2. Congratulations, Merril, and I love your poem! It brought back memories of my childhood winters in central NY state. “frost-brittled lawn” is perfect. Only someone who has experienced that kind of weather would put those words together like that. And that “strangely content” feeling? Exactly. Even as a child, there was something deliciously wonderful about having hot chocolate and cookies while snow overtook us. πŸ™‚
