I’m thrilled and very excited that my poem “The Way It Happened” has been published in the Ekphrastic Review as a challenge response. It responds to the most recent challenge–a painting by John William Waterhouse, “Hylas and the Nymphs.”
My thanks to editor Lorette C. Luzajic for selecting my poem. Jane Dougherty’s wonderful prose work is right after mine. You can read all the selected works here.
I’m sharing this with dVerse Open Link Night.
Congratulations Merril! As I said to Jane, I will catch up reading later as I am now behind with dVerse 😅
Thank you, Ingrid. I’ve been so behind with dVerse. 🤣 And I still have to get my prompt up for next week!
Congratulations, Merril. What a beautiful poem – and Jane’s prose was wonderful, too!

You’re welcome. I read both of them and love the deep “crone wisdom” in each of them.
I love that. Thank you again!💙
I am so pleased you read this Merril, as I hadn’t yet looked at the Ekphrastic review, and this is wonderful! I am fascinated by myths and their interpretation.
Thank you so much, Ingrid!
I haven’t looked at the most recent Ekphrastic Review issues, but when I saw that challenge, I really wanted to do it. 😀
I did too, as I’ve liked that painting since I was a kid, but then other things got in the way 😅
I understand!🤣
Congratulations!
Thank you!
congrats on your publication, i read your poem as well as the others, beautiful, thank you for sharing that with us
Thank you very much for reading it. I’m pleased you enjoyed it, and the others, too.
Congratulations, Merril. Your multiple takes on the legend/myth has me wondering how other tales might be interpreted.
Thank you very much, Ken. That’s something I think about often.
Congrats, I really loved to hear you read it… myths are a great source of inspiration.
Thank you very much, Björn!
