A Gift

Sunrise

A Gift

Dawn arrives on golden peacock wings,
I want to hold the moment—all such magic–

not in gilded cages,
but wrapped in a downy blanket,
like a baby held against my breast,

to cherish the weight
of heavy-lidded dreams–

of stars’ light
everywhere, here.

A quadrille for dVerse using the prompt word, wrap. I half-wrote this poem in the middle of the night, but then, there was this beautiful sunrise this morning.

  1. Nothing like a sunrise to set the tone for the day. This piece is beautiful, lyrical, refreshing, the antithesis of the morning world news.

  2. So beautifully composed and it literally made me sigh halfway through. There is a need to capture the magic of dawn, new beginnings, new hope and you’ve certainly done it here.

  3. You (and your poems) CONSTANTLY amaze me. This one is soooo beautiful that I’ve read it five times. And I’m about to read it five times more. What a beautiful soul you have, Merril, to write such poetry.

  4. Cherishing dawn. I like the way you described the color as golden peacock wings and the tender way dawn is held by your words. It is a precious gift to wake to this beautiful sky once again. A perfect poem to start my day.
    Thank you.

  5. Our hearts need this sort of tenderness in these times, to hold what is good, hopeful, bright, as carefully as an infant, to give and receive the gifts of that singular moment. A beautiful metaphor deftly and invisibly executed. Sorry to be so late to visit–life and such being annoying.
