Could I Soar

Could I Soar

Could I soar high through dappled, dazzling light,
I’d share with you the wing-brushed sky and all
the owl-moon hours, cloud-crowned in flight, cast bright
before the night in scope of hope. Banal
they seem, perhaps these dreams of splendid grace.
Unsung, undone, but better yet to wish
for if unthought, such dreams go by untraced–
a wave that’s rolled, a hook without the fish.
And yet, the days are scurried, worn-out fast,
and joy must be what we can see or hear—
bird-dawns, bat-dusks, remembered laughter passed,
child-songs, cat-purrs, the white-tailed flash of deer.
We drink, we play, and hand-in-hand walk through
each day we stay, I give my heart to you.

Today’s NaPoWriMo prompt was to write a sonnet. I haven’t written a sonnet in ages–and this was truly a challenge.

  1. This sonnet works very well as a love poem. I particuarly like these lines:

    Banal
they seem, perhaps these dreams of splendid grace.
Unsung, undone, but better yet to wish
for if unthought, such dreams go by untraced–

They have a Shakespearean vibe to them that speaks to me.

  2. It’s nice, Merril. I like your “modern line form,” I’m not good with those so generally I quit. Mine would fit “Prose Poem” fairly well, MAYBE.
