Asking

Odilon Redon, The Muse on Pegasus

Asking

I ask the stars to grant me gifts,
to make time slide, to make it shift—
as grass turns green, and then it fades,
an imprint left within mind’s shade

holds fast. Now leaves in fall’s winds drift—
I ask the stars to grant me gifts
of poetry and light so blue–
on riverbank, pink blossoms strewn,

a carpet for the squirrels and deer
to scatter as they scamper here.
I ask the stars to grant me gifts,
to bind me when strong forces rift

the shore and sea, cause winds to howl
and whip the clouds to make them scowl—
then I’ll exist when shadows lift–
I ask the stars—this–grant me gifts.

A quatrain for dVerse. Rhyme is not required. I used a few words from Oracle I and from Kerfe’s Oracle 2 random words.
Maybe this poem is connected to my poem yesterday about the Oracle.

  1. You always create such wonderful rhythm. The repeated line is a jewel.
I wrote something with a very similar feeling. Not sure if I’ll get it posted tonight. (K)

  2. Another gem, Merril!
This one has more of a rhyme thing happening, than oft.
I must go see if it is connected to yesterday’s.
    Love the painting.

      • Prose and exotic forms are popular now.
However, rhyme and meter are classic to my background.
There was a time poetry with all its rhyme and meter was the entertainment of its day.
Just ask the troubadours and minstrels!
        Ask Shakespeare!
The discipline of rhyme and meter help one read how the writer intended.
I adore all forms, but this is wonderful sometimes. 💙

  3. I enjoyed the rhythm and rhyme in your Quatern, Merril, the use of colour in the lines:
‘I ask the stars to grant me gifts
of poetry and light so blue–
    on riverbank, pink blossoms strewn’
and the sound and motion in:
‘the shore and sea, cause winds to howl
and whip the clouds to make them scowl’.

  4. With such rhythm your rhyme is never forced. I so enjoy your choice of illustration. I had a client, a very talented painter himself, of Odilon Redon, who introduced me to the artist years ago.

  5. “I ask the stars to grant me gifts
of poetry and light so blue–
    on riverbank, pink blossoms strewn,

a carpet for the squirrels and deer
to scatter as they scamper here.”
