I found “The Sea Hawk” to be a deeply reflective examination of time’s passage and the enduring power of memories.
I enjoyed Andrew’s use of colorful sentences and evocative descriptions to navigate the complexities of nostalgia and the inevitability of change.
What stayed with me was the recurring motif of the sea hawk, representing resilience and freedom. I thought it added depth to the poem’s exploration of life’s transient nature. I liked how it eloquently captured the universal experience of dealing with time’s relentless march while finding solace in cherished memories. Aren’t we all… The imagery, while not overly elaborate, effectively conveyed the poem’s themes. It lured me into the poet’s reflective journey. As the poem progressed I was invited to consider my own experiences of loss, growth, and
the enduring power of memory, and this is something else I enjoyed very much.
“The Sea Hawk” by Andrew McDowell is a thought-provoking and emotionally charged piece that stays with the reader long after the final stanza.
Thank you so much for your thorough and thoughtful review, Patricia! I, too, enjoyed the connection between life’s passage and the flight of the sea hawk. I’m certain Andrew will be very pleased to read your comment about his beautiful poem!
My pleasure. I also enjoyed Andrew’s pencil sketches that compliment his poems so well.
Yes, they’re lovely!
Thanks again, Patricia!
Hi Patrica, thank you for this delightful analysis of Andrew’s poem. I enjoyed his poems and drawings very much.
Thank you. I chose the sea hawk because it was my college mascot. The river was inspired by the St. Mary’s River.
Thank you, Merril, for setting up this lovely tour stop for our readers. 🙂

The Sea Hawk reading by Andrew is a wonderful serving of the kind of poetry to discover within the beautiful covers of this lovely anthology. I enjoyed listening. Loved how Andrew paced his words. Thanks for sharing this Merril and Andrew. I loved the whole reading and listened hard. Loved these lines:
So like a sea hawk time flies on/Without a cozy nest/Yet as the future comes along/Yet to come is the best//
Past is past but it’s never gone/Shining like a bright star/It remains in the heart and soul/They make us who we are//
This is the truth: the past lives on in our hearts and soul. Thank you dearly. Blessings.
Thank you so much for your beautiful comment, Selma! I agree that Andrew did a beautiful reading and also about the past living on. 💙
